Good ol´ Alabama BBQ!

vwcampin In this Deep-South state, usually hickory-smoked pork (top) is served chopped, sliced, or pulled (slow cooked at low temperatures, then pulled apart), often in a sandwich, served with coleslaw and dill pickles. Barbecue sauces are similar to those favored in North and South Carolina (see below), but Alabama also boasts its own local concoction, made of mayonnaise, apple-cider vinegar, lemon juice, horseradish, salt, and cayenne and black pepper.read post

Gulf Shores & Orange Beach cited in 'Themed Itineraries in the USA Satisfy Many People's Interests'

Some people are traipsing through lovely landscapes as others explore history from days of North America's earliest tribal peoples to the present. Avid birders use binoculars to spot colorful feathered friends in flight while canoers and kayakers dip paddles into the water. At the end of the day, many of these visitors to Panama City, Florida, belly up to an oyster bar to enjoy freshly shucked bivalves prepared in a variety of ways.   These seemingly disparate activities and attractions…

Alabama landmarks cited in '12 Top Destinations for African-Diaspora Travel'

dmbaker   Welcome to February! Since 1970, it's also been Black History Month in the USA, and since 1995 in Canada, as well (whereas it's observed in October in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and the Netherlands). And though the reason for the African diaspora was tragic and horrific - the brutal, centuries-long trafficking of human slaves - it has also enriched many parts of the world, and indeed, world culture as a whole. So what better way to kick BHM off than with a look at a dozen of the…

Montgomery's Legacy Museum one of the latest changing black travel

Just saw a great piece in Slate on how the new Legacy Museum is just the latest and best known example of a trend that is transforming African-diaspora tourism: "Thankfully, the opening of the Legacy Museum and the associated National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama, represents a growing wave of historical attractions aiming to look squarely at American history. A memorial and museum “dedicated to the legacy of enslaved black people, people terrorized by lynching, African…

  • Many visitors to the Yellowhammer State head for the Gulf coast beaches and Mobile. But there are plenty of great destinations upstate, too, including Birmingham for its Civil Rights-era history. Huntsville for its space-industry complex, and Tuscaloosa thanks to its gracious 19th-century architecture (it was the state capital from 1826 to 1846), museums, culture, an ancient Mississippian archaological site, and nightlife (it's a college town, after all. • Taylor Hicks and Courtney Cox
An old colleague of mine in Alabama tells me they've been hired to do endorsements of the Alabama coast. Do people really know who they are? And how effective is a "celebrity" endorsement like this in counteracting a serious p.r. problem?
