So without any further ado, Let’s just dive right into the story.

The Story goes like this.

Mughal emperor Shahjahan got married at the age of 17.

In those times marriages were more out of political and diplomatic interests than love or emotions.

The King had three wives, the first one was from Kandhar, Afghanistan.

Second wife was Mumtaz from Persia.

And, the third wife was from Kashmir.

He was a very lucky guy indeed!! You agree?

However, the King was never happy with the first and the third wife. He sent them back to their places.

On the other hand, he was most delighted and happy with Mumtaz!

Mumtaz was extraordinarily beautiful, as she was from Persia and it’s known for the natural beauty that women are bestowed with.

But that’s not all, he liked her more than other wives because she was more of a companion, who teamed up with Shahjahan and helped him in administration and battlefield planning and lots more.

So she was a true beauty with brains!!

Shahjahan was so happy with her that he gave her the title - Mumtaz,  which means - My Crown.

“You are my crown”!

He respected & admired Mumtaz more than anything in this world.

The testament to their love were the 13 children that they had together!

An Unfortunate happening - Laid the foundation:

Mumtaz got married at the tender age of 13 years and when she was conceiving the 14th baby her body developed medical complications.

At that time Shahjahan was not with her and was out hundreds of miles away in a battle planning.

She sent word out to her husband to come back as she knew that she would not survive.

At the deathbed, Shahjahan sat beside her and Mumtaz asked for 3 promises. They talked for the last time.

The promises were

  1. Not to marry again after her death.
  2. To take good care of all the 13 children
  3. To prove his love for her create something so phenomenal that her name is remembered by the world long after she is gone.

In year 1630 she died, and Shahjahan decided to build a mausoleum for her that no one could ever imagined can be built by humankind ever.
