Single travellers on the rise

Single travellers on the rise

Recent studies have shown that numbers of travellers going on asingles holiday are on the rise. In an analysis of over 100,000 the findings revealed that the average age of solo travellers is 54 years old; which may come as a surprise to those who pictured a 20-something group backpacker! It also showed that solo travelling carries less of a stigma of being for “singles” and people are becoming increasingly confident, especially women and opting to travel alone. As travel writer Cathy Wilson notes: “this is a trend that looks only set to increase”.

Research has shown that in the travel industry the biggest surge in demand can be found in the over 50’s traveller looking for single holidays. In recent years there has also been a sharp increase in demand for experiential holidays where guests can learn new skills and take more from a holiday than one would lying on a beach for a week. In our 15 years experience we find that our solo travellers choose to travel alone for a variety of reasons; from a spouse who doesn’t share an interest in painting or perhaps they were recently widowed or divorced. However, we find that the like-minded individuals on our holidays commonly keep in touch with each other long after the holiday has ended and many people become good friends.

Singles Holidays in Italy with Flavours

Since 1998 Flavours has welcomed solo travellers and we have maintained our policy to never charge a single supplement. On our holidays we find that typically 70% of the group is made up of guests travelling independently. We also ensure that our itineraries lend themselves to group camaraderie. From cooking lessons where the group makes the delicious 3 course dinner together under the guidance of our Italian chefs; or on trips to explore historic towns and local, artisan producers. There is always plenty to do, to talk about and a variety of opportunities to get to know the rest of the group in a relaxed atmosphere.
