These are some tips and a guide to travel in the North East and booking your tour package. After a lifetime of dreaming of exploring Guwahati, Shillong and Cherrapunji, it was a wonderful trip to North East.

Our brief itinerary of Shillong Cherrapunji Package Tour

Day 1: Arrival at Guwahati

We landed in Guwahati at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi international airport, inhaling fresh air. We felt delighted to witness such a busiest airport in India. At the counter, immigration formalities completed, then our North East tour guide greeted us with a warm welcome, and we headed on our journey to Guwahati Hotel. April is the spring season in North East, and the weather present pleasant seasons, with moderate temperature. We noticed April is amongst the popular months for tourist rush as it is neither too cold nor too hot. If you are planning a trip to North East, Spring may be your choice.

Day 2: Guwahati to Shillong

The next morning, we started the drive to Shillong, a beautiful hill station also referred to as the Scotland of the East, and it is the capital city of Meghalaya. We have learnt that these are major tourist destinations in North East India. The route between Guwahati to Shillong is superb, one of the most scenic ones in the North East that we have experienced. It passes through hilly, winding through steep valleys and dense mountain, giving an incredible view. En route to Shillong, the highlight of the day is Umiam Lake; we stopped at Umiam Lake, where we enjoyed some yummy Momos along with the scenic beauty of the lake. It took us 3 hours to reach beautiful Shillong.

After reaching Shillong, we have freshened up and visited Wards Lake, Lady Hydri Park and Don Bosco Museum.

Towards the evening, we explored Shillong Police Bazaar.

Day 3: Shillong- Mawphlang-Shillong

Shillong offered several places and activities to make it one of the most memorable trips in our lifetime. The first place that we have explored in Shillong was; Shillong Peak situated at the height of about 1970m above sea level. We have seen a breath-taking panoramic view of the Shillong city, the Himalayas, waterfalls, and the Bangladesh plains from the Shillong peak. On a chargeable basis, we even use a telescope to get a bird’s eye view. You can also try trekking to this semi-circular Shillong Peak, and the experience of being here is truly refreshing.

Then the Elephant fall is the most famous falls in Shillong. Shillong blessed with many incredible waterfalls, and undoubtedly Elephant falls were one of them we have explored. The fall has three mesmerizing layers, and to us, the third waterfalls seemed to be the most impressive. We wondered why this waterfall is known as Elephant fall, and we learnt from the guide some time ago there used to be a rock here that shaped like an elephant. The rock broke due to an earthquake but still now it carries the name Elephant falls. We spent quality time at the breathtaking Elephant Waterfalls while capturing incredible moments.

Then we visited the Mawphlang after having lunch, situated 25 Km away from beautiful Shillong. We learnt from our tour guide, Mawphlang is a land of unique culture and home to the Khasi heritage village, which gives the traditional lifestyle of the Khasi Tribes.

For the tourist like us who are fond of nature, Mawphlang forest is a perfect destination as Mawphlang forest is home to flora and fauna. Even we have seen Mawphlang falls, and it has its unique beauty, making it worst to visit it. Do you want to explore the tradition, culture and lifestyle of the Khasi, which is fading away in the modern world? Then Mawphlang is the right place to visit.

We reached our hotel in Shillong, had dinner, and went to sleep with all those beautiful memories of the day.

Day 4: Shillong-Dawki-Mawlynnong

On Day 4 of our trip, we headed to Dawki as we learnt that the Umngot River is famous for activities such as boating, cliff-climbing and camping. We had a thrilling experience of riding in wooden boats on the Umngot River as the water is crystal clear.

Then we headed towards Mawlynnong, in the East Khasi Hills of the Meghalaya state. We noticed it as the cleanest village in Asia, and I learnt from my guide this village awarded for being the cleanliest village. We have not seen even single plastic trash in the entire Mawlynnong village and dotted with bamboo garbage cans.

Here we took a tour of the Mawlynnong village and set off to explore the incredible Living Root Bridge made from the roots of hundreds of years old living trees. We also visited the balancing rock and had a great leisure time in a beautiful village.

The day ended with exploring the Sky Viewpoint from where we have seen a beautiful panoramic view of Bangladesh.

  Day 5: Mawlynnong- Cherrapunji

We started the day quite early; the drive is very scenic, and it gave us the chance to see the cloud covered hills and gorges. Cherrapunji is a perfect destination for all kinds of tourist, and it is also known as the wettest place on Earth. There are several things to see in Cherrapunji, and our first sightseeing was Nohkalikai falls; it is the tallest waterfall in India that we have ever encountered.

The next spot was Mawsmai Cave, it is always a unique experience to explore such a place, and to my surprise, we visited this very long cave. This cave is a must-visit place when you are in Cherrapunji, and for me, it was a thrilling experience as the cave well maintained.

We continued the sightseeing to Eco Park, located near seven sister’s fall, one of the popular tourist attractions of Cherrapunji. The Park is well maintained, and we admired the view of the plains of Bangladesh and waterfalls.

The day ended with the visit to Nohsngithiang falls, known as the Seven Sisters Waterfalls. The beauty of this waterfall is indescribable during sunset and the view mesmerizes any travellers.

Day 6: Cherrapunji Trek to Double Decker Bridge

On Day 6, we planned to go on the much-awaited trek to Double Decker Bridge. It is around 12km from Cherrapunji in a village known as Tyrna. To reach Double Decker Living Root Bridge, we need to go 3500 steps down the hill.

Once we reached halfway, we encountered a single-decker living root bridges, and it is surprising to see the cave on the other side of the bridge. We spent quality time admiring the bridge and having some snacks.

This place is worth visiting, and one must do it when in Meghalaya. Once we completed the trek, it was a unique experience and achievement.

 Day 7: Cherrapunji – Mawsynram-Guwahati

We headed towards the Mawsynram after exploring Cherrapunji. Mawsynram is a tiny village in the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya. We learnt from our guide that exquisite waterfalls, misty natural wonders, temple, mountain, lake make Mawsynram a prime destination for nature lovers.

We covered the most important places to visit in Mawsynram, such as Mawjymbuin caves, Mawlyngbna, and Khreng Khreng Viewpoint.

After having lunch in Mawsynram, then we drive back to Guwahati. In Guwahati, we have visited Kamakhya Temple on the Nilachal hills.

In the evening, we visited Guwahati city to do some shopping.

Day 8: Guwahati Airport Drop

Early morning we headed to Guwahati Airport for our onward destination. We had a great time in North East India, a beautiful unexplored paradise that tempts visitors with a uniquely blessed landscape, heritage and culture. The different destination In North East has incomparable beauty and enriching experience.
