Retired?  Consider a ‘home away from home’

Many Americans who retire head south for the winter to enjoy a warmer climate.  A lot of them buy a house or condo and end up with two pieces of property to deal with – two utility bills, two places to upkeep, two places to worry about.  Europeans have a better idea. They long-stay at a resort.  The Holiday Inn Resort in Cha’am, Thailand is just one resort in SE Asia that promotes the concept of ‘Home Away from Home.’

Many beach resorts in SE Asia offer long-stay discounts.  Imagine staying for three months or more at a beach resort.  Start the day with an expansive breakfast buffet then head for a day at the pool.  Read a book, walk along the beach, and buy fresh mangos and pineapple from the beach vendor for lunch.  While you are at the pool your room is being cleaned. In the evening there is always a choice of places to dine where dinner for two with libations averages $15.  Then there is the benefit of no cooking, no cleaning, and no second property to worry about.  And, the interesting thing is that even factoring in the airfare the costs are about the same.

At the Holiday Inn Cha’am, three hours south of Bangkok, some retirees from England, Finland, and Germany have been coming for three months or more for 20+ years.  The resort is wheelchair accessible.  Think of it weeks and weeks of sun and relaxation with no stress.
