Dooars, Doors to the forest is part of North Bengal and spread over three districts of WestBengal, namely Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and CoochBihar. Dooars has two National Parks, Jaldapara National Park, and Gorumara National Park. Both National Park houses famous Indian One horn Rhinos and various types of flora and fauna. The forest has wild animals like elephants, Bison, Peacock, Monkeys, and many others apart from OneHorn Rhino. The winter season is the ideal time to visit the Dooars forest and you can take different kinds of activities within the forest like Jungle Safari, Elephant Safari, Watch Tower safari. Chilapota is another forest in the Dooars area and it’s another side of Torsa River of Jaldapara Forest. Chilapota forest is thick and dense and tourists can enjoy the Jeep Safari over there.

Getting there for a Dooars Tour from Siliguri

Siliguri is the Gateway for any Dooars tour. Siliguri has Airport, named Bagdogra Airport, which is around 12 km away from the main city. New Jalpaiguri(NJP) is the Railway station for Siliguri. Both Bagdogra Airport and NJP Railway station are well connected by Air/Rail from different cities of India. It is also on the NH-34 and connecting Kolkata and Guwahati

Best Time to Visit Dooars Forest

Winter is the best season to visit for Dooars. From October to March is the best season and the forest is generally dry and the chances of sighting wild animals are more during this season.

Our favourite 5Night 6 Days tour itinerary

Day 1 – Arrive at Bagdogra Airport and proceed for a Dooars Tour. The journey will start at Lataguri Gorumara forest and around 60 km from Siliguri. The distance from Siliguri to Lataguri will be covered in 1.5 hours and will pass through Sevoke Coronation Bridge, various Tea gardens, and forest. You will be greeted with the Welcome Drink at the Lataguri Hotel during check-in. Freshen up and get ready for lunch. Post lunch =, you can take a jungle safari tour in Lataguri Gorumara Forest.

Day 2 – Early morning, take a private vehicle or even an E-rickshaw to reach the gate of Metla Watch Tower gate. Book your ticket for a Bullock cart ride to reach the watchtower. Wait and look around for wild animals, if you are lucky enough, you can spot a one-horn Rhino over there. Come back to the hotel for a breakfast and get ready for the hidden part of Dooars sightseeing.

Day 3 – Lataguri to Jaldapara via Khayerbari Tiger Rescue Center

Post breakfast, start for Jaldapara National Park, most famous for One-Horn Rhino in India and very popular for the wild lover tourists. On the way to Jaldapara, visit the Khayerbari Tiger Rescue center. Check-in at the Jaldapara Govt Tourist Lodge before noon and book the afternoon 3 pm Jeep Safari and next day morning 6 am Elephant safari from Jaldapara Tourist Lodge.

At 3 pm, start for Jeep Safari in Maruti Gypsey and enter into the forest. Watch calmly inside the forest and visit many watchtowers inside the jungle to look for a one-horn Rhino.

Follow the driver and guide instructions and try to find Rhino, Elephant, Bison, peacock, etc ..

N/Stay in Jaldapara

Day 4 – Wake up very early morning and start from the Tourist Lodge at around 5 am for a 6 am Elephant ride. The elephant ride will start from the Hollong Bungalow and this is the most attractive part for any Dooars Tour. Ride on the back of the elephant from an elephant riding point and an elephant will start moving towards the dense forest and it will continue after crossing the streams and inside the long trees and finally reach onto the grassland of Torsa river bed. Then you can see the home of One-horn Rhino is standing there and you can see them from a stone-throwing distance.

After the elephant safari, come back to the lodge and post-lunch you start for the Chilopota Jungle safari. It’s a 2-hour long safari that traverses through the dense forest and you can also visit a watchtower in front of the Torsa River.

Come back to the hotel in the evening and relax in the jungle ambiance.
