North of 
Norway's Arctic Circle in the Finnmark region, the small city of Alta (one of the world's northernmost), located on a west-coast fjord, is home to among other things gorgeous scenery, an ice hotel, and thousands of UNESCO World Heritage rock carvings dating as far back as 4200 BC. It's also home to some of Norway's Sami people (better known to many as Lapps), the Finno-Ugric people who have inhabited the northernmost reaches of Scandinavia since prehistoric times. These days, they are hunters, fishermen, and reindeer herders, in addition to receiving tourists interested in their way of life - particularly the reindeer side of things.
