In antiquity, the city of Cavtat was known as Epidaurus. A Greek colony was established there. Cavtat’s soil and surrounding seabed are brimming with artifacts from those times: coins, funeral stelae, baseboard fragments, mosaics, amphorae, and so on. Having been destroyed by barbarians, it was reconstructed in the 15th century in the beautifulDubrovnik style, with the same clear stone from Brai and with remarkable homogeneity.  Also to be found are several Roman remains, defensive walls dating from 1461, Saint Nicholas Church (1484) and Saint Vlaho Church (1483).

The city of Cavtat was extremely popular during the time of Austro-Hungarian rule and retains a certain ambiance ofsweet idleness in the shade of the palms down by the dock. If you are a fan of diving you must not miss Cavtat’s seabed, which is the best amphora site in the Adriatic and the Mediterranean. Stroll along the dock absorbing the aromas and sounds of nature, and enjoy the silence of the hidden bays and the rich cultural heritage. In the historic heart of the city the standout place is Vlaho Bukovac House, named after Croatia’s most significant painter. It is a museum, workshop and art gallery.

Cavtat is certainly a very tourist-friendly little town, with small inlets and beaches that will delight those seeking tranquility without sacrificing entertainment and good services.

If you want to enjoy some nature, sea, tranquility, and sweet idleness to recharge the batteries during your vacation, Cavtat is the place for you.
