The Canary Islands began to emerge from the ocean’s depths as a result of magmatic activity. This process began in the Miocene period, 23 million years ago. The oldest islands are La Gomera, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote, the youngest being El Hierro, La Palma, and Tenerife. Mount Teide, Spain’s highest peak at 3,718 m, is the third highest volcano on Earth from base to peak.

Getting up close to these volcanoes brings you closer to the very essence of the archipelago and allows you to understand and enjoy its personality, flavor, traditions and culture. These volcanic islands are a true testament to the forces of nature. Its hallmarks can be seen in the spectacular lunar landscapes, which surprise you with the amount of life they harbor, a good example being the vine crops used in the production of the exquisite Canarian wines.

In the last 500 years, only El Hierro (2), Lanzarote (2), Tenerife (5) and La Palma (7), have experienced volcanic eruptions. So there is no need to worry about getting swallowed up by lava! Most of the volcanoes only make the island landscapes more beautiful, if that is possible. The most famous, besides Mount Teide, are the Timanfaya volcano in Lanzarote, Hoyo Negro, Llano Blancon and San Juan in La Palma, and the underwater volcano at Mar de la Calma, in El Hierro, which started to erupt this year and has provided an incredible spectacle!!

As well as being impressive, the volcanoes of the Canary Islands are also very accessible. Whichever one you visit, you will find expert guides and a safe environment. Visiting these jewels of the Canary Islands is easier than you might think. Everything has been catered for, and you only have to ask at your hotel or at any tourist information office to be pointed in the right direction. Be sure to get up close to the Canary Islands’ volcanoes and discover their age-old mystery!
