Where in Amsterdam would you recommend for a two week stay? (medium priced)

I want to take my daughters (20 and 22) to Amsterdam and want to find a relatively affordable location. What are good neighborhoods out of the tourist track? THanks - w

Check out Fusion Suites, an upmarket bed-and-breakfast located in a wonderful residential neighborhood in Amsterdam. Just a few oversized rooms, personalized service and fantastic breakfasts cooked from scratch.
Owner is great at recommending fantastic excellent local restaurants that are not tourist traps.
Spent four nights here and was very impressed.

A friend who's in transit right now and unable to access her computer recommends Ambassade or Hotel Estherea (family run). Also, she says, there's also the youth hostel option: StayOK Zeeburg, 2007.
