Allow plenty of time to visit and find the answers to the questions of - What did Darwin? Why did Ayers Rock? What does Sydney Harbour? What did the great Australian Bight? What did Broome sweep? Who did the Rock Wave to? Who did the Nullabor? Who suffers from Tasmania? Why did Bungle, Bungle? What did Coral see? Why did the Nestrott? and then you have been there, done that and probably have a t-shirt or three..

It depends how long you have got, whether it's your first time and what you are trying to get from the trip. If it's your first time and you want to experience something ... dare I say it... "uniquely Australian" then ignore everywhere else and go to the Kimberley in far northwest Australia - ancient country, beautiful gorges, bird life, bee hive dome geology.

All depends on your interests. Don't miss Sydney. If you dive, sail or are passionate about nature, then head north to the Great Barrier Reef. If you have days to spare, visit Tasmania. If you have lots of days to spare, head inland to Ayers Rock, Alice Springs.
Otherwise, just enjoy the Aussies and be happy wherever you end up.

Wow, where to start? I had so many memorable experiences on my "Big Three" trip (Sydney, Cairns/Great Barrier Reef, Alice Springs/Outback). Wine country is awesome, if that's your thing - I had a marvelous swing through the Blue Mountains area, which is more reachable from Sydney than the Barossa down south. Also, if you make it out west in/around Perth, check out the soft adventure tour described in a blog post on this site, including "bush tucker" you won't find anywhere else in the world. What are your interests and how long are you planning to spend Down Under?

Hi Louise - I'm Cliff and I run traveljunkies.
Our daughter lives in Australia & we've been visiting a couple of times a year for the past 10 years.
My strong suggestion is if you don't have some ideas of where you want to go, book a tour and I can recommend Kontiki.com but there are many more. Also consider a cruise up the East coast
Plan your trip carefully, Australia is so big you can run the risk of spending all your time traveling and I really don't agree with Melanie Ball's advice. Kimberley is ok but it's thousands of miles from anywhere as is Perth or anywhere else on the West Coast. For a first trip, stay East coast.

Go to www.australia.com and pick a Premier Aussie Specialist. They are endorsed by the Australian Tourist Commission and most do educational trips once or twice a year.
