According to the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), international tourist arrivals in 2017 reached a total of 1.322 million worldwide. However, with the increasing number of people traveling abroad, these travellers are getting more and more attention from various fraudsters, especially online.

One of the biggest online threats for travelers is free public WiFi. Hackers often position themselves as free WiFi hotspots and easily steal personal information, credit card details or other d

Winter vacation season is coming soon, and still, many travelers keep getting their identities stolen due to careless use of public Wi-Fi. Free wireless networks are not able to offer security in most cases, since public Wi-Fi can be hacked into fairly easily. The solution to online safety while traveling is a VPN (Virtual Private Network), which not only protects users on public Wi-Fi but also allows to access restricted sites and even save money while traveling.

Every September 27, travelers celebrate International World Tourism Day. The tourism landscape has changed immensely since the first such celebration in 1980, with the Internet becoming inevitable for travelers and travel agents.  According to the World Tourism Organization (UNTWO), in 2018
84  percent of travelers booked their holiday through bundling sites like Expedia or Kayak instead of contacting hotels and airlines. This counts for 1.176 billion travelers.

When you go abroad, it would be nice to also take your favorite TV shows with you. If you are traveling abroad, you would certainly like to watch your home countries TV stations from your hotel room in the Bahamas or anywhere in the world. Recent events around the world have proven once again that holding a major event is no easy matter.  Not only must a community deal with the event itself but there are always logistics, marketing, and public relations that go hand in hand with a major event.  To make matters even more challenging we live in a world of political unrest. Major events are of course targets for terrorism.  They also may incite local protests that have nothing to do with terrorism. These demonstrations are byproducts

Protecting Tourism 'Soft Targets'

With the onset of the summer travel season in much of the world June is a good time to ask ourselves how well we are protecting our tourism sites.  Airlines and other forms of transportation have the advantage that they received government security.  Most other forms of tourism, such as hotels, restaurants, shopping centers, and major attractions such as theme parks receive little or no government security or protection.  In most cases, the tourism industry can depend on no one but itself.

Tourism Facing New Challenges in a New Year

Part I  (see below for Part II)

Now that the December holidays are past, and the parties have ended, just like almost everyone else, tourism professionals must return to a world of work and new challenges.  From health issues to economic issues, from issues of social unrest to all too often substandard customer service, tourism officials face a host of problems.  Some of these problems are within the tourism and travel industry’s control.  Although others are not in the industry’s direct control

Tourism Security as a Marketing Tool

Tourism security professionals and managers often (and justly) complain that they are considered expendable due to the fact that the other parts of the tourism industry perceive them as adding nothing to the bottom line.  In fact often tourism officials believe that security is simply and added and required expense that must be accepted, be that expense a burden. This month's Tourism Tidbits focuses on the other side of the coin, and emphasizes that not only is tourism security not simply a nece

Keeping Your Home Safe When You Travel

I travel a lot which means I'm away from home and it also means that I think about home safety and security.  I have a few things that I do but I'm always on the prowl for tips and useful information on keeping my home safe.  I live in a condominium and recently received a notice under my door that our building had two break ins.  Both break-ins occurred when the home owners were out of town.  This means that someone must have known they weren't home.  You couldn't get any closer to home than th

Airport Security

Don't get me wrong, I am all for safe and secure travel. What really annoys me is that there are many airports in the UK now that are charging passengers a fee to use a 'fast lane' service. This fee can be anything from £3 to £10 per passenger depending on the time of day or how busy the airport is.This, in my view is scandalous. What makes this even worse is that there are incentives from on airport services that offer free passes to use the 'fast lane', such as airport parking or even some airl

A Worrisome Letter From Mexico

The e-mail from my cousin in Mexico was fraught with anxiety.

She had lived in Puerto Vallarta for many years, and had settled down and married a wonderful Mexican man. Their life in Puerto Vallarta had been a simple one, but a happy one. They were both happy at their jobs, and life in this scenic west-coast resort city was buoyed by the constant stream of tourists from the visiting cruise ships. And this blessed white-washed city seemed to be a million miles away from the violence raging in much

Dumping the 3-1-1 Rule

From Blogger Pictures

It’s not official, and the Transportation Security Administration is tight-lipped, but practically speaking, the unpopular and probably ineffective 3-1-1 flight rule (no gels, aerosols or liquid) is all but dead.

3-1-1 limited passengers’ rights to carry any kind of liquid on a plane to a 3.4 ounce bottle, in a 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-lock bag, with a limit of 1 bag per passenger, placed in screening bin.
The agency’s web site still posts the restriction, but MSNBC

Traveling is not all about sightseeing, great restaurants and experiencing new cities. While these things are great and can make for really enjoyable travel, they are not always in the plans for weekly business travelers. We travel more often because we have to, not because we want to.

For those of us who travel routinely, it can sometimes be mundane things that happen to us along our journey that get us excited. Or we create our own fun with little games we play with ourselves to get through th

Likely 140 million Americans will travel this summer, and Wlasuk’s company says while you’re away, thieves are on the prowl for personal information on unsecured wireless networks, at the gas pump, at hotels or in your mailbox.
