Hiking Cape Verde's Fogo Island

Isla_do_fogo.jpg?width=640

Fogo island
is the highest of all of the islands in the Cape Verde archipelago. The “island-volcano” is a gigantic volcanic cone that rises from the water, and is ideal for hiking. The landscape is spectacular due to its high altitude, and it has a lovely crater of 8km in diameter with steep walls. Half of the crater collapsed in favor of a younger volcano, which, with its perfectly proportioned black cone, is the highest point on the archipelago (its peak at 2,829m). You can climb it with a gui

In the show, Nelson was a former US Navy frogman called to assist with dangerous underwater situations needing his skilled assistance. Many times he had to fight off aggressors doing dastardly deeds to save others or sunken treasures. Teenage girls loved him and future Navy Seals wanted to be him.

My heavily scheduled fam and I had an open August weekend, so I looked for a resort destination in Pennsylvania's Poconos (which is only a one-hour-plus drive from our home in northern New Jersey) where I, my wife Sue, our tween daughter, and teen son could all kick back and enjoy the area’s beautiful surroundings.

  • Skytop Lodge (Skytop, PA) - very nice, but we had already been there.

I’m a huge animal lover, and I’ve been writing about vacation resorts for a few years now. These two facts might at first seem like a non-sequitur, but on my recent visit to Iberostar’s five-resort Playa Paraíso complex on Mexico’s Mayan Riviera below Cancun, they came delightedly together.

Here not a day goes by where you won’t spot a charming critter with feathers, fins, or fur. Strolling from my room to dinner one evening at the Paraíso Maya, I came across a peacock calmly striding around t
