Gay Travel Germany: Suds und Sex in Gay Munich

It's that time of year again - Oktoberfest (aka Wiesn) is right around the corner (September 22-October 7; next year it's 9/21-10/6)!  But even if you don't make it for the world's biggest beer bash, Munich is still one of Europe's most attractive and fun cities, where autumn is lovely and even winter is a winner, especially during its world-famous Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas market) November 26 through December 24 - magical enough to get even a jaded Grinch like me grinning. And get this — Muc’

Have you considered what the old guy or lady down the street may have done in life beyond work at the supermarket? The people largely responsible for our freedoms are passing away. This June is the 70th anniversary of the World War II invasion of occupied France, known as D-Day.

Camel Bling at Abu Dhabi's Camel Festival

In all beauty pageants what one wears is most important. Beauty contestants usually get decked out in flowing evening gowns and skimpy swim suits. But camel beauty contestant dress in dazzling bling-bling called hatat. The hatat is artfully draped over the hump and around the neck and face like precious jewels. Actually, some are jewelry as they are made with real gold and semi-precious stones

Roger and I were at the Al Dhafra Camel Festival, held just past Madinat Zayed in the desert off Abu Dh

Best Picks for  Summertime Travel Novels

It's summer “ and the reading should be easy,” so I came up with a short list of a few travel novels that I personally found especially rich and exciting.

Very often a travel novel is a far better read than a guide book. It creates a vividness and depth of a town or village or city more memorably.

And so, with temps hovering in the 90’s, here are my summer picks for a lazy read. You certainly have your own.

In Travels with a Tangerine, Tim Mackintosh-Smith  s

When Did Travel Become a Commodity?

When Did Travel Become a Commodity?

When did it stop being an experience and more of a package, a deal, a search result?

Travel has turned into an obsession for the cheapest airfare, cheapest hotel room and pretty much the lowest, cheapest  cost for anything and every thing related to travel.

Wasn't so long ago that airlines, the most commodified of the travel experience were sufficiently different from each other that you could them apart.

There were differences in food served, space between rows

Kill the Travel Press Release-Tweet it Instead

So I was sitting at a media lunch when I overheard someone from a Canadian tourism office say to her companion that they were thinking of no longer sending travel media releases out. They were going to tweet them instead.

I was taken aback because just an hour previously, I wrote  this article and thought somehow she was the  angel of affirmation.

But she’s right on.

I receive on average 35 travel press releases a day,  in one form or another.

And that’s

Trinidad-cuba-by-Jzielcke.jpg?width=700

Certainly
Cuba has no shortage of charming Spanish colonial and early post-colonial architecture, from Pinar del Ríoout west to Santiago in the east. But for me the place that most makes me feel like I’ve actually stepped into the past of a century or more ago is Trinidad (Spanish for “trinity”), an almost ridiculously photogenic UNESCO World Heritage Site which in 2014 will commemorate its 500th anniversary.  In the province of Sancti Spiritus, on the south coast of the island’s midsection, i

singaporeskyline1.jpg?w=422&h=284&width=400Travelers often touch down in Singapore merely en route to Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and other countries in Asia (especially Southeast Asia).  That’s partly because it’s a hub for (naturally) Singapore Airlines, one of the world’s top-rated carriers. There’s an argument to be made that this singular city-state is intriguing enough to visit for its own sake. At the very least, though, if you’re continuing onward, a stopover here — seven time zones from London and 11 zones on

Jackson Hole Deals for Spring Skiing

THIS WESTERN RESORT TOWN IS A BARGAIN NOW

9008603095?profile=originalI've been skiing, dining, watching wildlife, and visiting spas in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and I'm here to say that if you're able to get there before April 3, the last day of winter season, go for it. This area has gotten a ton of snow, so the Tetons look beautiful, the sled dogs feel good, thousands of big-antlered elk are still lounging on the lowlands (the National Elk Refuge) right outside town, and hotels in Jackson Hole and Teton Mountain Village,

Travel and tourism professionals can never forget that their profession is not only one that evokes high levels of emotions, but is often open to all sorts of liability cases that range from the frivolous to the extremely serious.  To add to the confusion, what may be legal in one place may be illegal or liable in another location and often visitors may not only sue in the location in which an incident occurred but also once they have returned home.  This month's Tourism Tidbits might be read in

Will buying an airline ticket soon be as personalized as buying a suit from a sales person? Probably, as trends go.

It's no surprise that airlines want to personalize their relationships to their customers. If they can figure out how, it would be a huge step toward making the ticket-buying process a lot more individualized, and rewarding.

And why shouldn't it be?
After all, buy a book from Amazon or any savvy online retailer, and you're guided to other books you might like based on your readin

JetBlue’s Manager of Corporate Communications, Morgan Johnston, says “The mission of JetBlue is to ‘bring humanity back to air travel.’

If that isn’t Mission: Impossible, what is?

So when I read that NY Times best-selling author and  online community expert, Chris Brogan, awarded Johnston the title “Agent Zero,” - someone who creates a bridge between a company/brand and the people, I almost saluted.

But how does Morgan approach Mission: Impossible? How does he go about building a dynamic, loyal com
