The Netherlands' southernmost city, right on the border with Belgium, also lays claim to being the country's oldest, dating back to ancient Roman times, centuries BC. And more recently, in the 1990s, Maastricht (pop. 122,000) became known worldwide as the site of the eponymous treaty which established the European Union. Today, its mix of historic/cultural sites and fun vibe - in part powered by its many Dutch and international university students - is a magnet for many visitors (as are its marijuana "coffee shops"!).  keep reading
