Previously announced service cuts to the Port Jervis, N.Y., line of NJ Transit/MTA have been tossed, but the proposed 25 percent rate hikes haven't. I'm not sure whether it will be more economical to take the car or train at this point. These transit budget reductions will affect New York and New Jersey commuters.

You're right, Allie. My mother commuted to Manhattan on the Staten Island Ferry for many of her 77 years, and she never got tired of admiring the Manhattan skyline, Governor's Island, the Statue of Liberty, the tugboats, and so on. Somehow, she managed to see all this with the enthusiasm of a first-timer--a tourist who's taking the ferry for fun.

How long is everyone's commute? Do you think of yourselves as "travelers"?

Exactly, Allie! My daily commute takes 3-5 hours whether by train or car. There are so many stories to tell. I'll be sharing some in the coming days I'm sure and would love to hear others'.

I was so surprised to see a Commuters group here! But then I thought about how much of their lives my friends and neighbors spend commuting. In one commute between Princeton and Philadelphia or Cambridge and London, a person travels as much as most human beings traveled in their lives until a few hundred years ago. So I am glad to see this group. If people are going to travel to work, they might as well make the most of it.
