As the world's fourth largest island, widely considered to be an eighth continent of its own, Madagascar is a jewel in Africa. Its isolation is mesmerizing, with a variety of activities contained within this one space. From stately baobab trees, some of which are over 800 years old, to the cheeky, bright-eyed lemurs, to flora and fauna that is native to the island, there is no shortage of sights. If you are planning a trip here, then you need to first see how much time you have and then plan accordingly. Though you might want to see everything, if you only have a week then you might not be able to fit everything. The best thing is to pick key attractions and enjoy them in full rather than little bits of everything. This is entirely up to you.

Avenue of Baobabs

Found in Western Madagascar, the Avenue of Baobabs is a surreal experience, one that makes you feel like you truly are in a dream. In fact, it is so well-known and sought-after, that it is one of the most frequented spots. They were a part of local conservation initiatives, which in turn contributed to it being the island’s first natural monument. These trees are unlike any other, with wide trunks and spare leaves that fan around tabletop branches.

Lemurs

No topic about Madagascar is ever complete without these interesting and fascinating creatures. Yet another of its many species that are indigenous to the island, there are 103 lemur species that are sadly endangered and vulnerable. Lemurs have been around since before monkeys, making them some of the oldest primates in the world. They were meant to be here since there is a notable absence of monkeys, which is not so in Africa. If you browse through a few Madagascar safaris, you will be able to find a great one that will show you these creatures up close.

Hiking

If you are someone who loves to travel about on foot exploring, then this is the place for you. With many meandering natural walkways that are flagged by rivers and undulating terrains, the place is made for walking. Treks through rainforest parks are common and some parks are actually best experienced this way. You can look for accommodation in different areas that will allow you to plan a path. Try tens and outdoor camping for a really grounding trip.

Beaches

It might seem odd, even out of place, but beaches are a very enticing attraction. The pristine, clear blue waters of the Indian Ocean make for great snorkeling and diving as well. Visit Nosy-Be, a popular tourist hotspot for beach Madagascar getaways. These waters are incredibly safe to swim in, as the sea is shallow for a long way out, and gentle. You can lie in the water for hours on end and soak up the climate and sunshine in all their glory. You can split your trip, where maybe the first half you go adventuring and the second relax your sore muscles!
