There's a Buzz Over San Francisco in October

Blue Angels over the Golden Gate Bridge brings Fleet Week to Life

Blue Angels over the Golden Gate Bridge brings Fleet Week to Life

As a native San Franciscan I just love the month of  October in the  "city by the bay."  As many a local and tourist can attest to, San Francisco can be a bit overcast, windy and even cold on the 4th of July. But not in October. Summer arrives in San Francisco later than the rest of California. Our Indian summer comes in September and October. You just can't beat San Francisco in October. The city is warm and inviting. San Franciscans are at their best when the city warms up.

The highlight of October activities in San Francisco is ‘Fleet Week.’  Around one million visitors pack the city for this must see event.  San Francisco’s northern Marina District and Presidio’s Chrissy Field are filed with awe-struck on-lookers viewing Naval battleships. The city is a buzz with locals and tourists crowding San Francisco's far north-east quadrant.

The culmination to the event is on Saturday and finishing up on Sunday,  complete with the Blue Angels buzzing over the city, in the bay, and over the Golden Gate Bridge. Performing some of the most awesome aerial stunts guaranteed to take a spectator's breath away.  On Saturday and Sunday hoards of viewers crowd Crissy Field in the Presidio,  just outside of San Francisco’s Marina District for this once a year San Francisco event.

Nick’s Tip:

There are parties everywhere.  If you hang out at the local bars and restaurants on Union or Chestnut Streets, strike up a conversation with a local, as many locals have apartments in Pacific Heights, Cow Hollow, or the Marina District, and are throwing a house party, or at least know of someone who is throwing a party.  Watching the Blue Angels from a deck or a roof top with food and drinks, is the way to go. Now if you’re really lucky hanging out at the likes of Perry’s Bar and Restaurant on Union Street or The Balboa Cafe on Fillmore Street, chat up a boat owner, and you just may find yourself on a yacht in the San Francisco Bay with fighter planes buzzing the bay.

The series of Fleet Week events is scheduled for Oct 4-8, 2012.
