Lake Placid is the perfect destination in any season and for any reason.  But it is the winter season that put Lake Placid on the map. Lake Placid, in the High Peaks area of the Adirondack, is considered the birthplace of winter sports in America and it was the site of 1932 and 1980 Olympics. After the skiing, snowboarding, skating and sledding check out these indoor activities.

  1. Olympic Museum: Explore the legacy of the 1932 and 1980 Lake Placid Winter Games in the many exhibits, which include video highlights, athletes' uniforms and equipment, and historical information about all of the area's Olympic sites.
  2. The Miracle: Take a guided tour of the Olympic Sports Complex where "The Miracle" happened in 1980 when the U.S. Hockey Team beat the Soviet Union. And, where, in 1932, figure skater-turned movie star Sonja Henie grabbed her second of three consecutive Olympic gold medals. There are four fully-operating rinks in Lake Placid.
  3. Feel the thrill: While in the Olympic Center, don't miss the virtual reality experience. The simulation includes a bobsled ride from the drivers point-of-view, the thrill of alpine skiing, ice hockey from the goalie’s perspective, and ski jumping from the 120m tower - all in one experience.
