I tried out Kusmi’s selection of 12…

Boracay, A Refuge From the Usual Chaos of the Philippines

As I get on the plane from Manila to Boracay, the Philippines’ paradise tourist resort, the bad weather seems to haunt me. I’ve rented a room there already, if nothing else so at least a way of getting away from the hawkers at the airport. Not much of an airport, by the way: A short cement strip along the ocean, mountains on one side, sea on the other. The lads unload our luggage straight on the tarmac and bring them into a small terminal…

Mongolia: So Far From God, So Close to China

As the plane is landing at Chinggis Khan International Airport in Ulaan Bator, I look down at the dirt tracks swirling through the pastures surrounding the runway.  They look something like a beginner’s guide to chaos theory, the likely paths and the harder ones, converging and re-converging according to some logic…

The Romance of Old-fashioned Train Travel in Costa Rica's Monteverde Cloud Forest

The romance of traveling by train never fades. Trains mean a journey. The feeling of travel while sitting on a train is unique. The scenery flows past in a way not like from an airplane or in a car – especially if you’re the one driving and you can’t sightsee, but also because a train crosses countryside instead of following busy roads.…

'Orienteering' at Missouri's Rock Bridge State Park

As with most of our family weekend trips, we were up well before the sun. The aroma of coffee filled the back of the house as I went to the kitchen to begin making sandwiches for the day. It was a broad menu to choose from, Nutella or peanut butter. Chips and snacks were put in a plastic bag and drinks were piled into a medium cooler. Everyone was looking forward to going somewhere new and the kids were looking forward to learning how to navigate using a map and compass.

For the…
