Ethiopia's Legend of the Snake of Axum

Lesson First

There is no crystal clear thing as this: that history of every part of the world begins with legends. Some we can find written in books and some came down to our generation by oral. The history of this nation – Ethiopia starts with a legend that we would not have the nerve to say ‘you shall know what we speak is true’.  Later, in the history, however, all we speak we know, are true for we have brought them from nowhere but credible sources.

In the…

In Dongguan, China, The Avenue That Loves People

I seldom venture from the posh Parklane Hotel here in Dongguan. It’s grand enough to take it personally. The surrounding avenues and architecture are monumental, a person could get lost crossing the road. So I am reluctant, you understand. And I normally arrive late on a muggy southern China night and leave early the next morning so there has been no need. Today is different. They will pick me up in the smart car tomorrow. I arrived last night. That’s a whole day. The size and weight of…

Micronesia: Guam's Glitter Gulch & Pohnpei's 'No-Service' Atoll

MICRONESIA: GUAM’S GLITTER GULCH & POHNPEI’S NOSERVICE ATOLL

Unbeknownst to most of us Guam has had much of the same history as the Philippines, first coming to the world’s attention during Ferdinand Magellan’s famous booty call to the region in 1521.  I suspect he found more in the Philippines because he died there and Spain didn’t get around to formally…

Trading Insults With an Angry Lion

Australia Zoo

Australia Zoo was established in 1970 by Robert Irwin, as the ‘Beerwah Reptile and Fauna Park’, on the grounds of a former macadamia nut farm. From an early age, his son, Steve, helped his father with the animals, both looking after them, and rescuing and relocating them.

As most people know, Steve…

Gena: Ethiopian Christmas

We don’t have Santa Claus here. We never saw him in the streets carrying big sacks and presenting Christmas gifts for our kids. We never saw the snow falling down on our roofs or on the ground. It doesn’t matter though. We have our own Christmas; a Christmas on which we share big smiles that you wouldn’t see…

In the Philippines, the Boondocks of Bontoc, Sagada, Banaue - and Back to Manila

After a near panic-attack—or maybe it was claustrophobia, I’m not sure—from being in rooms without windows for six days straight, I get on the bus from Baguio to Sagada resolving to do better.  I even find banana bread.  That’s a good sign.  “You ever have before?” the lady behind the smile asks.  I smile back.  Does a hippie live in the woods?  “I’ve had it all my life.”

That’s probably the first thing I ever cooked.

The Philippines really are nice; they just…
