And today in Catalan language news... piece in the NY Times about Catalonia's legislature about to approve a measure to require all foreign films be dubbed in Catalan. Good idea or now? Article.

I attach a link to a song by the algherese singer Lluciana Sari. Although in the description of this group it does not appear, the Catalan language is also spoken in Italy, in Alghero (L'Alguer in Catalan), a town in the island of Sardinia.

I've found in keeping my languages up that music -- especially pop songs -- is a huge help, and so I thought I'd kick this off by offering "Temps era temps," one of my old favorites by Catalan singer Joan Manuel Serrat, who has also had plenty hits in Spanish. It's from the early 1980s, if I remember right, but I like the tune, and the lyrics do a nice job of evoking what Catalans and their culture went through under the Franco regime.

amb l'or a Moscú,

la flota al moll
i la llengua al cul,
amb els smbols arraconats,
