Did anyone see today's NYT piece on the past, present and possible future of Atlantic City? Fascinating primer on the city's 20th/21st-century history, (did you know the current mayor's a former casino pit boss?). The news hook is ostensibly this:

"Gov. Chris Christie...announced plans last month to revive this city’s flagging economy by having the state essentially take over municipal operations in the casino district."

But the pieces still ends with a question mark:

"...as gambling continues to expand in neighboring states — Pennsylvania and Delaware both recently added table games to their slot-machine parlors — Atlantic City casino operators and local and state officials have not reached a consensus on how to change the city’s appeal.

'What’s fascinating to me is this town’s always been able to sell itself, to sell something beyond its true worth,' Nelson Johnson [author of Boardwalk Empire, on which an upcoming HBO series is based] said. 'I’ve seen it all my life, and maybe we’ll see it again.'"

Hawaii may add gambling to its natural beauty

HONOLULU (AP) -- Hawaii has always been known for its sun, sand and surf. It may soon add another attraction: slots.

Hawaii is one of the last two states with no legalized gambling, but lawmakers facing billion-dollar budget deficits and hunting for ways increase revenue are thinking about allowing casinos in tourist-filled Waikiki or on Native Hawaiian lands.

Proponents say casinos would draw much-needed new money and jobs into the long-troubled, tourism-dependent economy.

Tourists from the mainland would skip Las Vegas to sun on pristine beaches and take a turn at the roulette tables. Coveted high-rollers from Asia could avoid the long trans-Pacific flight, shortening their trip to the slots while also checking out the hula dancing.

Where the heck is Mmbatho??? More into Foxwoods here... but not into gambling bigtime, it's fun to watch the crowds. Never been to Vegas, hope to go one day soon!
