the world's smartest travel social network
Hi folks,
Later this month I have two 7-hour stopovers in Lisbon, one on my way from Munich to Sao Paulo and then on the way back again. I'm looking for suggestions on how to spend say 5 hours (each stop) to most effectively get a peek at and sense of the city. Not really interested in racing through the "top ten must see/do" tourist moo-ings. Locals sharing their favourite neighbourhood walk, cafe for people watching, off the beaten track shops or just favourite place to "be" in Lisbon would be appreciated. I am not looking for article fodder. I just want to breath in this new (to me) localle for awhile instead of wasting so many hours in an airport.
cheers
Elizabeth

I only want to add that you should not dismiss it because it's in the guidebooks. This is a different world, so go there and (I mean this in a positive way) get lost. The north-south streets leading from the waterfront are echte Lisbon -- and some are for pedestrians only -- and, leading north from the recently restored train station, the more modern Avenida Libertade is lovely.
The eggy pastries at Pasteles de Belem deserve their fame, the place itself is full of authentic tiles, and it's also full of locals as well as visitors. The nearby Tower of Belem? Not my cup of tea, but the Monastery of Geronimo is a magnificent 16th-century building(s). Even the locals go there on weekends.
